Clinical

Clinical Sessions involve intensive therapy conducted exclusively by our allied health professionals who are registered clinicians:

  • Speech & Language Therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Occupational Therapists

Our clinical professionals meet on a regular basis at our team meetings to plan and monitor the programs of treatment and progress of every clinical client.

This is a truly multi-disciplinary approach.

An example of this multi-disciplinary approach could be that the client is receiving speech & language therapy, but is also being monitored by our psychologist who was part of his/her assessment and goal setting. Alternatively, there may be a “tag-team” approach, where the client initially receives speech & language therapy and then is transitioned to an OT for short-term intensive therapy – each client is different.

Depending upon the client’s needs and desired outcomes; clinical work may target the following:

  • Reading and Writing difficulties such as Dyslexia (involving various aspects of reading, spelling, comprehension and written expression)
  • Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD) that affect aspects of learning such as difficulties in memory, planning, associating ideas, expressing ideas, fluency and speed, visual processing, auditory processing etc.
  • Articulation (e.g. pronunciation such as a lisp)
  • Language (e.g. grammar, vocabulary, concept development)
  • Phonological Awareness (the building blocks of early literacy)
  • “Late” (or delayed) talkers
  • ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders or ASD like behaviours)
  • Augmented and/or Alternative Communications strategies and devices
  • Apraxia (or Childhood Apraxia of Speech)
  • Fine Motor interventions (e.g. muscle tone, positioning, posture, grip, eye and hand dominance)
  • Sensory issues
  • Challenging learning related behaviours such as worry, avoidance, inattention, distraction, low self-esteem etc.
  • Positive Parenting Strategies (assisting parents manage their child’s challenging behaviours)

Frequency Asked Questions

What do Clinical Sessions involve?

Clinical Sessions typically include practices such as:
- Using prior assessment/s to devise or select appropriate evidenced based programs and interventions
- Setting goals and the mechanisms to achieve these goals
- Delivering evidence-based practices/therapy to the client
- Adjusting/altering the program or specific intervention to achieve a client's changing needs

Who does Clinical Sessions and why?

At Cumberland we conduct two different types of Clinical Sessions.

Short-Term Therapy
This type of clinical work specifically aims to establish an individual learning program.

The clinician uses information collated from current assessments to develop a program of therapeutic and evidence-based interventions. This short term therapy involves establishing and delivering the fundamentals of this individualised program.

This work is done prior to a handover to our trained tutors, who then begin Specialised Lessons.
This type of clinical work typically takes approximately 5-10 sessions.

OR

Long-Term Therapy
This type of clinical work provides ongoing therapy sessions with our:
- Speech & Language Therapists
- Psychologists
- Occupational Therapists

This type of work may take around 12-15 sessions. Although this varies and for some clients, clinical work is less than 12 sessions, and for others with more complex needs, they may require more than 15 sessions.

When and where are Clinical Sessions conducted?

Typically Clinical Sessions are conducted in a 1:1 setting, on a weekly basis. Sessions can be conducted throughout the day (during school hours) or after school hours and on Saturdays.

The type, and expected duration, of clinical work to be conducted, will be clearly outlined prior to commencement of therapy. It will also be reviewed on a consistent basis.

Clinical Sessions are often conducted at schools if approved by the school. Please ask your school if they would like us to work collaboratively in this manner.

How much do Clinical Sessions cost?

We pride ourselves on our affordable and competitive prices. Clinical sessions cost $85 per half hour.
